ARMBRUST HILL WILDLIFE RESERVATION, Vinalhaven, attractive nature area once quarried for granite. Small pond, birches, overlooks, quarry garden. Trails, picnic area, parking.



BARRED ISLAND PRESERVE
, Deer Isle, wooded and shrub-covered island connected to mainland by sandbar at low water; no land access, however.






BIRDSACRE SANCTUARY
, Ellsworth, 40-acre woodland sanctuary adjacent museum/house of ornithologist. Eight trails, three small ponds. Parking; free.




BLAGDEN PRESERVE, Bar Harbor, 110-acre secluded preserve features tall red spruce, white cedar and balsam. 300-yd shoreline. Limited parking.








CROCKETT COVE WOODS PRESERVE
, Stonington, 100-acre preserve bordering cove, includes mature spruce fir forest and stretch of tamarack dominated swamp. Nature trail.



GREAT WASS ISLAND NATURE PRESERVE,
Beals Island, spectacular 1,540-acre tract showing evidence of "Fundian Fault" and home to several rare plants and natural communities.




LANES ISLAND PRESERVE, Vinalhaven, 43 acres, wild rocky coast, rolling moors, cover of blueberry, rose, bayberry, spruce. Trails; road to island (limited parking).



MERRYSPRING HORTICULTURAL NATURE PARK, Camden, 66 acres. Footpaths meander through perennial gardens, woodland garden, arboretum. Education programs. Parking. Donations welcome.



PETIT MANAN NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE, East Steuben, 3335 acres. Salt marshes, heaths, blueberry fields. Two interpretive trails. Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing. Parking.



SHIP HARBOR NATURE TRAIL, Southwest Harbor. Pleasant self-guiding loop route through spruce woods, along shore. Pink granite ledges, views. Parking.
